South End Tour - Part I: The Butcher Shop (Boston)
Mr. Rabbit and I found ourselves in Boston for a July weekend, and I finally bossed him into trying some of the South End restos that I’ve been eager to explore. I did a little research on the food board (special thanks to Chowhounders!) so that I could lead Mr. on a decent crawl (sans reservations on a Saturday!).
We showed up at B&G Oysters and The Butcher Shop (neighbouring sister restos run by Boston chef celebre Barbara Lynch) at about 8:30. B&G was hopping, but there were two empty seats at the Butcher bar, so we took that as a sign (snack time!).
We had a couple glasses of Burgundy (their delightful red of the day), and an antipasti plate. Note that the antipasti here features cured meats, while the charcuterie plate showcases their pates (good to know, and not clear from the menu). Mr. Rabbit’s fave was the duck prosciutto, while I fell for the mortadella (haven’t had this in such a long time). Stewed prunes were a nice complement to the meats (five varieties in all), which also came with hummus and a generous chunk of parmigiano. Oh - and the bread came with honey… nice touch.
I’d read complaints that BS is too expensive, and that service can be lacking. I thought prices were very fair for interesting wine selections, and our server was friendly and very openly enthusiastic about wine… I actually learned a few things. I think this is a great neighbourhood spot. But perhaps we just “ordered right.” And thinking this may have been the case, we chose to clear out while we were still perfectly happy…
