Windham Restaurant (Windham, NH)
OK - I wouldn’t exactly call this a foodie find… but it was a not unpleasant-dining experience, and those of you who live in southern NH will appreciate that it’s really slim picking around here.
The restaurant is in a big, old house, the main floor of which has a dining room on one side and a bar on the other (more dining rooms upstairs). We ate at the bar (as we usually do), a cozy room with a nice fire going. Nobody’s going to accuse this place of being stylish (this is NH), but it was warm and inviting.
We both had salads which were very nicely prepared, with generous portions of fresh ingredients. I had spinach which came with walnuts and gorgonzola, while Mr. Rabbit had greens with beets and goat cheese. I ordered a balsamic on the side and it was too oily, but it was on the side, so no big deal. Bread was a warmed focaccia, which was pleasant.
I ordered crab and shrimp cakes for my main. While passable, the cakes suffered from being a bit too greasy, and slightly soggy. They were plated on some spinach leaves that absorbed a lot of the sog - which was both comforting and slightly alarming. Mr. Rabbit had lamb, which came with really wonderful mashed potatos and some veg. Lamb rack was generous, and looked lovely - but was unfortunately overcooked.
We split a tiramisu for dessert, which turned out, unfortunately, to be a fake sort of timamisu cake creation, like a trying-to-be-fancy dessert factory would turn out.
Grapefruit martini was very nice, manhattan was well done, and a glass of riesling was as expected (very easy to put back).
This review might sound complain-y or unsatisfied, but that’s because we’re spoiled food snobs. In truth, Windham Restaurant provided a totally pleasant, casual dinner and we’re adding it to our local rotation for when we’re at the NH house.
